- Tempera & pastel on board,
20″ x 30″
This piece was a great lesson in “fluorescents do not reproduce well.” Not that it would constitute any sort of a deterrent for an artist fascinated by optical effects.
The demise of Pearl Paint which occupied 6 glorious floors of specialty items, not to be found anywhere else, was much decried by New York City artists. Its iconic crammed and shabby building off Canal Street was a testament to SoHo’s glory days in the global art scene. And to reasonable rents. Pearl is responsible for the discovery of the unique materials used here. The tempera has an unparalleled tactile velvety quality that has prodded many to touch the painting. Over it, white pastel hovers softly, its competition with the brightness of the florescent giving it a very aethereal quality. Trio is one of a series of 3 images using the same materials, only two of which are pictured below.
