- Pen & Ink on Board,
20 x 30in
Weaving and other textile art is unquestioningly the inspiration for this piece, which translates thread into thin lines of ink. Gold and silver point weave with florescent pink, tackling stubborn stereotypes associated with women’s art and with colors that are deemed feminine.
It seems assumed frivolity follows women into every one of their creative endeavors; and to be appreciated, women must shun all identifiable marks of femininity. Bold and unashamed, this piece is not for the faint of heart. Taking inspiration from many sources, including hand-woven fabrics and neolithic art, it weaves together a variety of marks and textures into a unique tapestry of styles.
This is in many ways a 2020 pandemic piece. With studios on lockdown and schools and galleries closed, pen & ink was the only medium unintrusive enough to use at home. Easy to set up and to clean up, and requiring little space, it was a clever way to stay creative under the circumstances.
It is now continuing its life in a satisfied client’s home.
